Do I need a bond?
If you qualify as a Supplier of Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies (DMEPOS) and submit billable items through CMS, you are required to file a bond in 2009.
How many bonds do I need?
The law requires a $50,000 bond to be filed for each NPI number that generates any billing to CMS for DMEPOS:
Example: A single pharmacy has a NPI for a store and each Pharmacist, so it may need 3 bonds for that location, depending on the number of NPIs.
Bond Amount
The newly released 2009 regulations require a $50,000 bond for each NPI number, If any of the NPIs needing a bond have incurred a citation for violation, the bond amount is increased by $50,000 for each violation.
